Wal-Mart weighs how to handle Gettysburg site structures

Wal-Mart official Don Shinkle said community input should guide the decision on two historic buildings near the planned Gettysburg store in Straban Township. He noted both buildings may be saved if historically significant, and that final say rests with the township supervisors after a demolition review.

Fire destroys home of Blue Ridge Summit couple with 24 foster children

A Blue Ridge Summit couple who foster 24 children, some handicapped, lost their three story Buena Vista Road home to fire started by a 6 year old. One child, Mark Adams, was in satisfactory condition in Waynesboro Hospital. Firefighters arrived at 6:54 a.m. and returned at 10:05 a.m. The Adamas evacuated the home and later moved to a minister’s house in Shippensburg after sheltering at a Catholic retreat.

Gettysburg teacher named national humanities fellow

Nancy R. D Agostino of Keefauver Elementary School in Gettysburg is among 169 teachers chosen from 1400 applicants for the 1990 National Fellowship for Independent Study in the Humanities. She will study Shakespeare and the question of the woman's part, examining six plays from social cultural feminist and psychoanalytic angles.

County opens trash disposal bids in Adams County

Adams County Commissioners and the Adams County Solid Waste Authority reviewed four bids for county trash disposal from Waste Management of North America Ben Salem Pa ITC Waste Services Scotland Pa and York County Solid Waste and Refuse Authority. Bid totals ranged 35.99 to 36.25 per ton for the three options and up to 45 per ton from York authority with a 10 year contract under Act 101. The SWA and county solicitors will study the bids before a recommendation at the next meeting as the DER reviews the county solid waste plan and reuse of landfill space is debated. The ITC proposal highlights a recycling center adjacent to a landfill with 35 percent of waste redirected from landfills. The SWA meets the second Tuesday monthly and the public may attend.

Cumberland approves traffic rules and campground expansion

Cumberland Township Supervisors pass three ordinances on traffic and parking. A three way stop at Woodcrest and Cumberland Drive is set. Parking is banned on the south side of McAllister Mill Road with a 25 dollar fine. Swetland Road speed is lowered to 25 mph. The board also approves Phase for Roundtop Campground expansion to 260 sites and 60 mobile homes with its own treatment plant and water supply. Police report 128 May incidents, 66 traffic stops, 23 arrests. House numbers become mandatory on residences and mailboxes amid positive feedback.
