Sub Skipper Sinks First Jap Ship On Pearl Harbor Day
Lt. Cmdr Chester C. Smith of Bisbee Arizona commanded the submarine Swordfish in the first U S attack of the Pacific war as Japan struck Pearl Harbor on December 8 1941. The submarine fired torpedoes sinking a Japanese freighter amid the South Pacific waters. The Swordfish faced depth charges and enemy escorts as it lurched from a perilous perimeter.

Pfc Robert S Grissinger age 19 declared slain after being listed missing since April 7 his telegram said. He served in General Patton's Seventh Army during World War II and had earlier been wounded in action earning a Purple Heart. He rejoined his unit in December after a period abroad and is survived by his parents and one brother John S Grissinger a Navy pharmacist's mate stationed at Chelsea Massachusetts.
