Zoning Board to rule on motel signs and Wendy's case

Adams County Zoning Hearing Board meets tonight to decide on motel sign variances along Route 30 and hear a Wendy's drive thru and impervious coverage requests for a site in Mechanicsburg. Also on the docket is a challenge to the interchange zoning ordinance and a billboard dispute on Route 30. The board meets at 7 p.m. in room 207 of the Adams County Courthouse.

Festival promoters sue township over new safety law

Park Avenue Promotions of Germantown Maryland filed federal and state suits Friday in Harrisburg and Gettysburg to block enforcement of Franklin Township’s public safety ordinance. The National Festival of the Arts is planned for August 23 to 37 on a Franklin Township farm, drawing potential crowds of hundreds of thousands. The federal suit claims civil rights violations and seeks a restraining order. the state suit argues the ordinance is overly restrictive. A hearing is set for August 3 with possible further review August 10. Burr Deming called the court process reassuring. Supervisor John White said the aim is safety, not denial of the event.

Tornados touch down in western Pennsylvania

Two tornadoes touched down in western Pennsylvania as a storm moved through Beaver and Butler counties. A trailer was split in Worth Township near Cooper's Lake, uprooting many trees with no injuries reported. Reports of ground contact near Aliquippa and multiple tornado sightings in Raccoon and Center townships followed as the National Weather Service issued warnings.
