Car hits pole cuts power to Gettysburg area

A car crashed into a utility pole on West High Street in Gettysburg, breaking the pole and severing major lines. Met Ed said 300 to 400 homes and businesses lost power for about 30 minutes, with most restored by midnight. Police cited burglar alarms triggered citywide and minor injuries to Florence Saltzer, who was hospitalized.

Campaigns Begin For 91st District Race In Adams County

Despite four months to go before the November vote, incumbent Democrat Kenneth J. Cole and Republican challenger Thomas L. Collins have started preliminary campaign steps in Gettysburg. Both say full effort begins after Labor Day with name recognition, volunteer organization, and fundraising activities highlighted, including Collins hosting a July 29 fundraiser with Lt. Gov. William Scranton.

Weather deepens heat wave and calm at Eisenhower site

The 24 hour period ending 5 p m Sunday saw temperatures peak at 96 degrees with 95 degrees at 5 p m Sunday and a low of 77 degrees. No precipitation was recorded at the Eisenhower National Historic Site weather station. Monday brings partly cloudy skies, very warm humid conditions, and a chance of afternoon thunder storms. Winds from the west around 10 mph. Monday night remains partly cloudy and cooler with lows 65 to 70. Tuesday promises fair and refreshing conditions with highs in the mid to upper 80s and a 50 percent chance of rain tomorrow, 10 percent Monday night. Wednesday fair, Thursday and Friday partly cloudy with a risk of showers. lows 60 to 70 and highs 85 to 90.

Hamilton Township adopts zoning ordinance to guide development

Hamilton Township in Adams County adopts a zoning ordinance enacted May 27 taking effect June 1. The plan designates agricultural, residential, conservation, trade and service and industrial districts to guide growth. It emphasizes farmland as the key resource and limits single family lots to one acre. The measure aims to prevent overcrowding and blight while ensuring logical land use and varied housing. It also regulates signs and requires plant screening around industrial sites, with detailed rules for lot sizes setbacks and special districts.

Gettysburg Considers Yard Sale Ordinance to Limit Signs

Gettysburg borough council weighs an ordinance to stop daily and weekend yard sales and restrict yard sale signs to the sale property. Borough Manager Charles W. Sterner notes repeat sales at a few homes and says fines or permits may curb the problem. The measure, to be voted Aug 9 at 7 30 pm in council chambers, also enforces sign limits under the town sign ordinance.

Adams Cumberland Medical Center adds family physician

Dr Dow E Brophy joins the Adams Cumberland Medical Center staff as a full time family practice physician. He trained in Lille France and Quincy Illinois, choosing rural medicine to serve families in the Route 34 area between Gardners and Idaville. The permanent center aims to offer a pharmacy lab and 24 hour access, with a planned November opening while operations run from a temporary trailer.
