Park service drops plan to move Gettysburg Visitor Center

The National Park Service scales back the Draft General Management Plan for Gettysburg National Military Park. It abandons moving the Visitor Center to Route 34 and favors renovating the current center at a cost of 800000 to 1000000 dollars. The plan aims to improve battlefield presentation, reduce non historic traffic, study archaeological sites, and involve local municipalities in land use controls while seeking public comments by September 6. A public meeting is scheduled for August 4 at the Cyclorama Center auditorium.

Supervisors Must Answer Fire Department Suit in Adams County Court

Franklin Township supervisors must respond to a lawsuit from Buchanan Valley Volunteer Fire Department filed in Adams County Court. Judge Oscar F. Spicer overruled preliminary objections, granting 20 days to answer, and noted the suit could show inadequate fire protection and potential improvements if the fire company is sanctioned. The case, the third filed, challenges a 1979 decision to withhold sanction from the Buchanan Valley Fire Co. and cites alleged bias by Supervisor Rene R. Williams and terrain-related response delays from Cashtown Fire Co.
