Flood victims go home as water levels recede

Hundreds of western Pennsylvania residents returned to their sodden homes Friday after evacuations caused by rain swollen creeks. The National Weather Service warned of possible renewed floods with showers and thunderstorms likely Friday night and Saturday. Heavy rain early in the week dropped up to 5 inches in Butler and Beaver counties, flooding roads basements and homes. no injuries were reported. Local evacuations affected Camp Red Wing in Butler County and several townships along Connoquenessing Creek and the Connoquessing River.

Army to Close Local ROTC Units in 27 States

The Army will shut 50 ROTC units including Gettysburg College and several Pennsylvania schools as part of a plan to cut active duty by 20 percent over five years. The move will save about 23 million annually but cost 740 ROTC personnel jobs. Cadets not graduating next year may transfer if on scholarship. Units will close by end of 1990-91 academic year with remaining programs in 50 states and territories.

Littlestown youth reading camp sparks summer learning fun

Littlestown students in a six week Summer reading camp at Rolling Acres Elementary and Maple Avenue Middle learn reading writing and spelling through themed weeks. Fifty three youngsters from first to sixth grade participate as teachers Ann Luquette and Pam Coburn guide creative lessons culminating in a treasure themed escape through a three story building. The program aims to boost reading while using films games and the school computer room.

Taylor trial may begin in Adams County courtroom

Public Hearing Set On Keystone Sanitation Landfill RI/FS

EPA officials plan a public hearing on the Keystone Sanitation Co. Inc. 35 acre landfill in Union Township near the Maryland border. The event is in Gettysburg Junior High School auditorium on Wednesday August 15 at 7 p.m. Public comment follows release next Wednesday of the RI/FS report, with copies available at Adams County and Hanover libraries. The waste site was added to the Superfund National Priorities List in July 1987, with groundwater concerns dating to 1985 at the Clouser Road landfill, and a separate state hearing on a proposed 211 acre expansion was denied in June 1989 for design and suitability reasons.
