Two Hurt In Crashes In County On Weekend
Two people injured in weekend traffic crashes on snow and ice covered county roads. Kathryn Hershey, 72, of Abbottstown, admitted for observation after being hit at Rt 30 and Abbott St intersection on Saturday. Alfred Delp, 62, of Idaville, treated for forehead lacerations after his truck was struck on Rt 34 while snow blowing. James Welshonce, 24, of Orrstown, escaped injury when his Toyota rolled on Cashtown-Arendstown road.

Gettysburg Senior High School hosts a second night of registration for the Continuing Education Program. Alan R. Gray notes courses in shorthand typing sewing and macrame begin Mondays at 7 pm on Jan 3 with a 12-student minimum. A new Thursday painting course runs Feb 2 from 7 to 10 pm. Fees are 35 for residents of the Gettysburg Area School District and 15 for nonresidents.

Towed Car Is In Crash At Tracks Near Gettysburg
Gettysburg Borough Police reported minor damages to two vehicles after a tow truck pulled a stuck 1972 Chevrolet from railroad tracks near Railroad and N Washington Street shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday. The Chevrolet, owned by John Straley, was being moved by Allen Kershner of Swope's Inc and sideswiped a 1977 Ford owned by Kenneth Coutlangus, Gettysburg R. 9.

The Navy plans to retire the Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear powered submarine. Defense officials say the ship will leave active service next year at age 25 as part of the 1979 military budget. Commissioned in 1954, the Nautilus pioneered nuclear propulsion on its 1958 voyage from Hawaii to England.

Carter proposes $500 billion budget with larger defense and education funds
President Carter sent Congress a fiscal 1979 budget totaling about $300.2 billion in outlays with a $60.6 billion deficit.
