A cable contractor cutting a natural gas line triggered a blast that destroyed a two story house in Westminster and damaged up to 50 nearby homes. About 300 residents were evacuated to an armory for Red Cross aid. one person was treated for a seizure.
Gettysburg Times Info Connect survey asked readers to vote on restoring the railroad cut excavation in Gettysburg National Military Park at Gettysburg College. 69 percent opposed restoration with 44 callers while 31 percent supported it with 20 callers.
Bio-Oxidation Inc launches a needle disposal program in Adams County with local pharmacies collecting used needles syringes and lancets for safe disposal via electrical pyrolysis. About 3 000 to 5 000 needles are used daily in the county with many ending up in household trash. Lifeline Pharmacy Biglerville reports positive community response as the first site.
Dr. Henry Lutz president of the Gettysburg Area School Board announced his candidacy for Adams County prothonotary. A 57 year old former Lighthouse Baptist Church pastor, he says he wants to maintain efficient local government while leaving the school board if elected. He cites his contract negotiations and a new school facility as examples of service to the community. He lives at 95 White Church Road with his wife Lou and their four children.
A Malvern company plans a 300000 square foot shopping center and 100 room lodge on 1 1? acres along Route 15 near Lake Heritage. The project, named The Shoppes at Gettysburg, features Civil War era design with shops, restaurants, open porches, decorative signage, fountains, gazebos and a town clock. Utilities from Lake Heritage Municipal Authority are sought. plans expected by April.
The Adams County Coroner's Office recorded 163 cases in 1994 with three homicides, 12 personal crisis reports, and 17 vesicular fatalities. Natural deaths numbered 35, mostly heart disease, with AIDS-related cases few and deaths from cancer rare.
