Free swim plan questioned at Gettysburg schools

Gettysburg area residents question why St Francis Xavier third graders must pay $650 for the American Red Cross beginner swimming course while Gettysburg Area School District students receive it free through the YWCA program. Local school board backs home rule bill in Harrisburg

Littlestown School Board adopts a resolution urging state lawmakers to pass home rule legislation. superintendent Glenn Moyer cites reduced mandates and local flexibility, but warns potential cuts to state subsidies. The board also rejects funding for club transportation as a nonessential expenditure and hires an architect for school window retrofit plans. The district approves gym use for Bethel Assembly of God and the Firebirds Drum and Bugle Corps during a national competition in August.

Simpson urges jobs for the handicapped at Adams Shelter workshop

David Simpson, executive director of Adams Hanover Sheltered Workshop, says placing handicapped workers in jobs saves taxpayers about two million dollars annually. He spoke at Christ Lutheran Church on normalization and equal rights, noting progress since the 1960s and the workshop's impact in New Oxford with 150 clients and 50 intellectually disabled workers.

Hamiltonban swears in Fountaindale fire chiefs

Hamiltonban Township chairman Stephen Jacobs swore in Fountaindale Fire Chief George Shindledecker and Fire Company head George Hahn at a Monday night meeting. They will serve with the Fountaindale Fire Company. Supervisors discussed police jurisdiction on Fairfield School grounds and considered using security personnel at school events.

Gettysburg Rec Board elects Kenworthy president

Robert B Kenworthy was elected president of the Gettysburg Recreation Board at Monday night’s meeting. He succeeds Elizabeth Daniels, who resigned after joining the Gettysburg Borough Council. Barbara Wickerham was elected vice president, succeeding Kenworthy. The board planned band shell dedication May 9 at 3 pm with the Gettysburg High School Orchestra and noted May performances by Cross and Flame Singers and the Gettysburg High School Chorus.

Gettysburg interns gain newsroom experience at Times

Three Gettysburg College students undertake January term internships at the Gettysburg Times. Maria Caracciolo, Lisa Orstad, and David Schafer join the staff to learn reporting, editing, and the newspaper’s computer system. Caracciolo, a junior and Sigma Kappa president, balances activities from journalism to bowling and drama. Orstad, a self-designed communications major, credits the internship with steering her toward advertising. Schafer, a Pottsgrove graduate, serves as news editor and eyeing seminary, cherishing hands on work in the newsroom and with photo and layout tools.

AFS seeks local families for visitors in Gettysburg

Gettysburg High School AFS Chapter seeks host families for foreign students aged 16 to 19 for the upcoming school year. Hosts need not have high school age children, and while food costs and incidental expenses arise, no special expenditures are required. A $50 monthly IRS tax deduction may apply.
