Fay Sensenes Improves Daily After Reye’s Syndrome Fight

Fay Sensenes a 15-year-old Gettysburg High School sophomore shows daily improvement at Hershey Medical Center her mother Mrs Charles Sensenes reports. She is recovering her voice and can swallow liquids after being moved from intensive care December 26 as doctors note she is the first post puberty child to recover from the illness. Fay resides in room 759 and visitors are welcome with cold precautions in place.

Crime total rises in Gettysburg in 1977 year end report

Gettysburg Borough reports 807 criminal offenses in 1977 up 28 from 1976. Clearance rose to 68 percent with 427 arrests. Motor vehicle accidents and arrests declined, but total complaints increased 3.7 percent to 7,401. Two fatal injuries marked borough auto fatalities.

Dr North Sterrett of Warner Hospital says the influenza peak passed about ten days ago with some new cases still reported. A Texas flu strains detected in blood tests and throat cultures. no effective vaccine yet. Most symptoms align across strains including chest pains fever and cough. illness lasts five to seven days, cough up to two weeks. No real epidemic in schools as most cases occurred during Christmas holidays.

Adams County Loses Anti-Recession Funds Due To Low Unemployment

Adams County commissioners announced eligibility for anti-recession ARFA funds is denied for the first quarter of 1978 because unemployment rates from July October 1977 and the quarter end fail to meet standards. Snow And Ice Turn County To Wonderland

Adams Countians awoke to a winter wonderland as ice coated trees sparkled in bright sun. By 9 am the temperature reached 30 degrees and county roads remained hazardous with traffic crawling. PennDOT warned treacherous conditions on all routes except US Route 15.

Kansan Named New County Library Director for Adams County

Carolyn Meiser of Concordia Kansas was chosen from 97 candidates to lead the Adams County Public Library, replacing Louise Pittman who moved to New York. Meiser, a former director in Concordia, arrives in Gettysburg this week and will be honored at a Friends of the Library reception Sunday 3 to 5 pm. Reservations for the January 21 dinner are urged.
