Adams County sees seven year low in December construction

December 1981 proves the slowest month for Adams County construction in seven years as 21 permits totaling 435 401 were issued by the County Chief Assessor s Office. Residential and general projects combined lag behind recent months with only one project over 100 000 and renovations making up a third of activity.

Snowstorm in Adams County Halts Travel and Delays Schools

A statewide snowstorm dumped nearly four inches in Adams County with few local accidents. PennDOT crews began plowing at 3 a.m. and will resume early Thursday, aided by 35 trucks and 75 workers and salt and cinders on state highways. State police noted wet roads on interstates. School districts varied from delayed openings to early dismissals or closures, with Gettysburg and Bermudian Springs reporting half days or delays, and Conewago Valley noting a half day for Littlestown students.

ACLU to aid inmate over county jail guard assault claim

The ACLU will offer legal counsel to an Adams County Prison inmate amid unconfirmed reports a guard assaulted him last month. Attorney J. Thomas Mennecker said the group will talk with the prisoner and assess potential civil rights violations. Starner was dismissed December 11, with police investigating. prison officials offered limited details.

Two crashes shook the capital city as a rush hour subway derailment killed at least two and injured eight while a separate airliner strike damaged a bridge nearby. Authorities probed cause and coordinated emergency responses across the urban area.

Man returns to school after 24 years to earn GED

William Tilley, a Zeigler Brothers maintenance director, returned to high school after 24 years to pursue a GED. Nominated by instructor Mrs. Frances Koch, his determination inspired coworkers to pursue adult education. He balanced work and study, improving vocabulary and math, and eventually passed his GED, aiding two colleagues to enroll as well.
