McSherrystown mayor pushes for fourth patrolman

Mayor Thomas J. Weaver clashed with the borough council over adding a fourth full time patrolman to the three man police force. He argued the extra officer would provide around the clock protection without tax hikes, while the council warned the budget would stay as is and revenue sharing cuts could force tighter spending. Weaver cited resident support and campaign promises, but council president Richard J. Smith said most residents do not want another officer.

Upper Adams School Board adopts testing rules for 1982

The Upper Adams School Board on Monday night approved a testing regulation to start in 1982 83 requiring comprehensive end of marking period exams for grades 9 through 12 with scores averaged into each period. The board also heard cost reduction plans from the athletic committee and approved several personnel and policy changes including new bus rules and chocolate milk trials.

Hanover Man Killed Crossing Route 134 in Adams County

A Hanover area man, Burnell S. Shaffer, 53, was struck and killed while crossing Route 134 in front of the Midway Country Store about 6:15 PM Monday. He was taken to Hanover Hospital and pronounced dead by York County Coroner Kathryn L. Fourhman. Police continued the investigation. it was Adams County’s first traffic fatality of 1982.

Michael Manor nursing home sold to New Jersey firm

The Michael Manor nursing home in Gettysburg was sold this month to a New Jersey based geriatric care organization for an undisclosed sum. Joseph Kaplan, president of American Health Systems, would not release the sale price. Franklin water ban stays after pump failure

Franklin Township Municipal Authority kept outdoor water use banned after an essential pump burned out. Help from Gettysburg Municipal Authority Cashtown Fire Company Knouse Foods and others aided pump replacement and water hauling to replenish reservoirs while the new pump took over. The authority thanked all helpers and urged continued conservation.

Straban approves closing 4000 feet of Natural Springs Road

Straban Township supervisors gave final approval to an ordinance closing slightly over 4000 feet of Natural Springs Road amid objections from property owners Raymond McCoy and William, who claim limited access to their properties from Route 30. Public exceptions may be filed within 30 days after registry at the county courthouse. The board also improves a deed for 80 by 80 feet of land for a cul de sac and discusses Lake Heritage borough plans, sewer funding, and subdivision proposals.

Elk shot in pen at Gettysburg Gate Park

A female elk and her calf were shot and killed Saturday at Gettysburg Gate Park two miles west of Fairfield in Hamiltonian Township. Police suspect two male juveniles entered by cutting the outer fence, luring the tame elk, and shooting it in the neck with a small caliber firearm. The park owner Richard Zimmerman is offering a reward for those responsible.

Lawmakers push Ertel draft for Pennsylvania governorship

A coalition of twelve legislators formed a committee urging U.S. Rep. Allen Ertel to consider running for governor. Cole called Ertel the party’s best vote-getter and urged unity to beat the incumbent Thornburgh. Ertel, 45, a Montoursville Democrat, was vacationing in Mexico and not available for comment. redistricting plans threaten his district.
