Clouds linger with a 40 percent chance of sprinkles or flurries and highs in the mid 30s. Tonight a 60 percent rain chance with potential sleet or freezing rain and steady mid 30s temperatures. Thursday cloudy with 60 percent light rain or drizzle and a high near 40s.
Cumberland Township Supervisors wrap up their first 1995 meeting in under 30 minutes. They read minutes, paid bills, reappointed James D. Fox and Beth Greentea to the Historical Architectural Review Board, approved a small subdivision plan granting nearly half an acre to Tand N Realty from Adams County Habitat for Humanity, and noted the Christmas tree pickup program is proceeding well.
Federal authorities acknowledged they are investigating allegations that state Attorney General Ernie Preate Jr. accepted illegal campaign contributions. The claims emerged during opening arguments in the Gary Frey trial, a video poker operator charged with obstructing justice and lying to a grand jury probing Preate.
Adams County residents can now take the driver’s exam and get a license photo at a renovated Gettysburg center at 59 N. Fifth St. near Romana, replacing older sites at 35 N. Stratton St. and Fairfield Road. Confusion remains as maps and signage lag, with hours listed for exam and photo services and statewide confusion noted by PennDOT.
Bermudian Springs School District directors approved a revised plan changing graduation credits from 26 to 27 and converting computer and driver education into a single half or full credit. The plan, tied to its six year Strategic Plan, shifts to an eight period day for ninth graders entering fall 1995 and bases credits on outcomes rather than Carnegie units.
At the Pennsylvania Farm Show Dairy Day in Harrisburg more than 600 dairy cattle occupied the North Building for the Dairy Cattle Show and Dairy Fun Night. Joy Hess of Gettysburg showed Becky the Brown Swiss taking second in the Dry Cow class while Azure was used later for Junior Showmanship. Holtzinger family from East Berlin reported camping out since Thursday and saw daughter Shannon’s Kim win first in Youth and second in Open with other Holtz cows placing well.
Lancaster meteorologist Joe Calhoun forecasts normal to above normal temperatures with increased precipitation due to West Coast storminess. He warns a wet winter is more likely than heavy snowfall, predicting mixed rain, sleet and freezing rain managed by ongoing storm patterns.
WGAL-TV 8 chief meteorologist says the Lancaster station is ready for winter with a new weather forecasting system. Joe Calhoun notes ongoing improvements to state of the art equipment to enhance viewer experience in south central Pennsylvania.
A WGAL forecaster credited the station with unparalleled weather coverage, noting it outshines others nationwide. He recalled working in the Midwest after earning a Penn State meteorology degree, saying Weather is King elsewhere but WGAL’s capabilities exceed those settings.
In Littlestown a month after approving a three year contract the school board met to consider reopening the supplemental salaries for coaches band directors and student group advisers. Pennsylvania State Education Association representative Don Peroni requested renewed negotiations citing alleged miscalculations while district officials defended the figures.
Doug Armacost of Littlestown will chair the Littlestown Branch YMCA annual support campaign running February 16 to March 22 with a goal of 12000 dollars. Thomas E. Miller and a team of 35 volunteers will lead fundraising efforts to fund scholarships and youth programs.
