Centralized tax assessment system gains support from chief assessor

John E Sarde, the county chief assessor, defends a six month old centralized assessment system as effective, despite criticism that it overrides elected municipal assessors. He notes prior irregularities and vacancies in several municipalities and says the new process, under county supervision, replaces elected officials with assistant assessors to better gather population changes and data for occupation and per capita tax rolls.

Talks May Restart Lake Heritage Sewer Plan Negotiations

Midwest suffers coldest day of century

The coldest day of the 20th century hit much of the Midwest with blizzards and massive power outages. In Chicago the temperature dropped to minus 26 with wind chills near 81 below. at least 11 deaths were linked to the weather as utilities faced outages and emergency crews battled blazes and icebound hoses. Schools planned not to open, while residents faced frozen water lines and stranded travelers across several states.

Record low temperature hits zero on January 11

The Times reports a record low of zero degrees on January 11 according to the weather records. Some Adams County areas fell below zero while Chicago recorded 26 degrees below. Historical data show 1930 had a high of 62 and a low of 33, while 1970 featured a 16/2 high/low for January 10.

College to hold service and lecture for MLK birthday

Gettysburg College will host a worship service Friday at 7 30 pm in Christ Chapel and a lecture Thursday at 7 30 pm by Congressman William H Gray III in commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. birthday. The events are sponsored by local Lutheran churches the Black community led by Mary Alice Nutter the Chapel Council and Gettysburg College Black Student Union. Gray, a Pennsylvania Democrat, is a longtime pastor and congressman active in foreign aid and minority staffing legislation. He and his wife Andrea Dash live in Philadelphia with their sons.

Fuel assistance available locally for seniors

Adams County offers state fuel assistance applications at senior centers in January and February. Citizens over 60 may apply. centers include Littlestown Littlestown Centenary Methodist Church with Jan 12 Feb 9, New Oxford St Pauls UCC Church with Jan 20 Feb 17, Upper Adams Biglerville Methodist Church with Jan 28 Feb 25, York Springs Holy Trinity Church Feb 2, Gettysburg Center 10N Stratton St Feb 4. Indoor fires spike as cold snaps hit county

Fire crews across the county battled multiple indoor blazes as temperatures plunged. Two Emmitsburg firefighters were treated for eye injuries from a chimney fire at the Edgar Hobbs residence near Greenmount, while York Springs and surrounding departments contained furnace and chimney fires at several homes along Route 44, Bermudian Creek Road, and near Gettysburg. Damages ranged from slight to about $2,000 with crews returning to scenes Sunday for additional chimney and furnace fires.
