John E Sarde, the county chief assessor, defends a six month old centralized assessment system as effective, despite criticism that it overrides elected municipal assessors. He notes prior irregularities and vacancies in several municipalities and says the new process, under county supervision, replaces elected officials with assistant assessors to better gather population changes and data for occupation and per capita tax rolls.
