Adams County study on Mount Joy waste transfer plan
Adams County Solid Waste Authority discussed the Mount Joy Township transfer station project led by Rob Campbell the new manager for Adams County Transfer Inc. The plan faces strong opposition from Mount Joy Solid Waste Citizens Group which has gathered about 4,000 signatures urging the county to oppose the site. The project would be built south of Gettysburg pending DER permits and could be grandfathered if the county’s solid waste plan not yet in force is approved.

Adams County Solid Waste Authority elects officers and reviews plan
The Adams County Solid Waste Authority held its annual reorganizational meeting with Elmer W. Gall continuing as president and Donald Waddell as vice president. Sharon Sheppard and Mike Malewicki stay as secretary and treasurer. Catherine W. Gault was reappointed solicitor. The board meets monthly on the second Tuesday in room 207 of the Adams County Courthouse Annex. Members include Curt Hearn Fred Hopper and Don Mason. The body is reviewing a countywide solid waste plan adopted Nov 28 and sent to 34 municipalities with 90 days to ratify or reject. If not ratified the plan goes to DER for countywide adoption. Board members discussed sending ratification forms to municipalities to simplify replies.

Bermudian school board approves 2.3 million bond for new school
The Bermudian School Board approved a 2.3 million bond purchase contract with Hopner Soliday Co. to fund a new school building. Superintendent Dr. W Reese Lichtel cited rapid growth and staff space needs while Principal Dr. Gerald J. Soltis noted enrollment at the elementary school has risen to 530 after Christmas. The board also hired Barbara Kessler as middle school aide and created a second guidance counselor position. Leaks in elementary roofs were repaired though minor leaks persist in non-pupil areas and heating problems continue to surface during vacations.
