Timothy Ray Sucik, 28, formerly of Greencastle, Pa., was sentenced to life without parole for fatally stabbing his estranged wife Marian Grace Sucik, 21, of Maugansville, four chest wounds, one in the abdomen and one in the neck on January 24, 1994. A Washington County jury convicted him after a little over an hour of deliberation. The judge cited absolute and unrepentant disregard for human life.
Pennsylvania Governor elect Tom Ridge said a new cooperative era between Congress and state governors may begin, with states gaining more say. He joined about 20 Republican governors and congressional leaders at a policy seminar, noting the new GOP leadership appeared receptive to gubernatorial input and called the meeting productive.
Republican leaders secured support from governors for a balanced budget plan and a welfare overhaul that would compress 336 federal programs into eight state block grants. Governors praised a streamlined system though wary over funding tied to new duties, while Democrats pressed for concrete deficit-elimination details and constitutional safeguards.
State and local crews in Adams County battled a mixed winter storm Friday night. Snow turned to sleet and rain, freezing on contact, with police reporting a busy evening but no serious crashes. Crews planned to focus on major highways overnight and resume full maintenance in the morning.
Harrisburg reports typical Farm Show activity with crews moving in displays and judging entries. Adams County exhibitors like Billy Brent and Hollabaugh Brothers Fruit Farm showcase fruit, with Jerome Frecon of Rutgers Cooperative Extension judging for size color blemish and condition. Despite harsh winter last year the fruit entries remain high as Adams County fruit quality garners praise.
Hank Janney and his wife Miki, new Arrow Horse owners at 51 Chambersburg St, say downtown Gettysburg’s revival gains momentum with expanded hours and a broader selection. Kim and Scott Hamm of Moonacre Ironworks at 62 Chambersburg St opened last June and report strong sales, especially after Black Friday, drawing locals and tourists. Dawn Williams of the Gettysburg Retail Merchants Association credits fresh entrants for the rebound as merchants attract customers downtown.
Local repair shop promotes 20 percent off tune ups and major overhauls for Jan February and March. Hours daily 8 to 5 with Saturday 8 to 3. Also H S Supply advertises cleaning systems and phone number. The Hitching Post in Biglerville offers 30 to 50 percent off winter merchandise. An ad note corrects an error in the January 6 Gettysburg Times issue.
