Partly sunny and colder today with temperatures in the lower 30s. West winds 15 to 25 mph and gusty. Tonight partly cloudy with diminishing winds and lows 15 to 20. Tuesday brings more sun and chilly conditions with highs in the lower to mid 30s.
The U S Postal Service released a 32 cent stamp symbolizing New Year 1995. By midnight Sunday all first class letters must bear a G-series stamp or 32 cents in postage. The stamp is valid for domestic mail including possessions and military posts. Also remember to date documents 1995 and watch for tax forms and notices.
An explosion and fire at the Fayette Chemical plant in Uniontown forced evacuations of about 50 residents from nearby homes and a high rise. Fire crews from four departments contained the blaze after several hours, with liquid gas and powdered chlorine present in the building and no injuries reported. A smoky cloud rose over the one story plant across from the town fire and police stations.
A 22 year old man John C Salvi II was charged with murder in Brookline Massachusetts and attempted murder after shootings at a Hillcrest Clinic in Virginia. In a Sunday interview friend John Christo said Salvi appeared distressed and defended him against media portrayals. Salvi remained jailed without bail awaiting a court appearance while anti abortion activists gathered outside the Norfolk jail.
Area lawmakers see a GOP controlled legislature as a vehicle for reform. Senator Terry Punt of Waynesboro expects tax reform, business climate improvements, and bipartisan cooperation to advance legislative changes while Governor Ridge prepares to take office.
UN commander Sir Michael Rose led talks in Sarajevo as Bosnia and rebel Serbs agree to regional commissions to monitor progress. A tentative plan to open civilian routes from Sarajevo was reported with hopes for a stable four month truce and renewed negotiations amid years of war.
Russian forces bombard Grozny with artillery tanks and rockets while Chechen fighters claim repelling a New Year attack. Moscow says the presidential building is surrounded and Dudayev may have fled, though claims are unverified. Fire, counterclaims, and heavy resistance mark a climactic push in Chechnya.
