Tentative accord reached in 9 month Pittston coal strike

Washington AP reports a tentative agreement ends a violent nine month strike by 1,700 Pittston miners in Virginia West Virginia and Kentucky. UMW president Trumka calls it a victory for collective bargaining and says ratification awaits union rank and file within eight to ten days. Stakeholders pledge to settle pension and health care issues via a new commission with six month reporting, while Bush welcomes the settlement.

At least six die on Pa highways in New Year rush

Icy roads across Pennsylvania during the New Year weekend left at least six dead. Victims include Thomas E. Head 32 of Orwigsburg killed near Berks County Route 222 after colliding with a second car driven by Charles E. Bailey 43 of Denver. Bailey not injured. Michael Grim 30 of Boyertown died after his car crashed into a tree in Earl Township. Debra Grim injured. William Heintzelman 30 of Beavertown died at the scene in Mifflin County near Wagner. Susan D. Salvatore 23 of Oley Township died when her car spun and was hit by a pickup driven by Gary Leister 33 of Oley Town. Leister treated and released.
