Weather briefing notes variable cloudiness and strong west wind today. Daytime highs in the low to mid 40s with west winds 15 to 25 mph. Tonight mostly clear with a low around 20. Saturday begins mostly sunny then increasing clouds in the afternoon, high in the mid 30s.
Gettysburg Times continues its Between classes series with Bermudian Springs High School as the focus today on page B. The paper has profiled Adams County schools across elementary middle and high levels this week and will feature others in coming months including Conewago Valley Littlestown and Upper Adams districts.
Littlestown Borough Manager Richard Selby will speak at 7:30 p.m. Monday Feb 27 in the Kingsdale Firehall on how growth and new housing development affect the area school district and local taxes. President Sue Shildt said the meeting is open to all residents interested in the topic.
State Sen Terry Punt says he favors raising the speed limit to 65 mph on interstate and turnpike sections after surveying district constituents about the measure. He cautions support depends on bill details and suggests local authorities should adjust limits for safety in urban areas and metropolises like York City. He notes shifts from the federal 55 mph rule since the oil crisis and mixed findings on safety impacts.
Gettysburg National Military Park Superintendent Dr. John Latschar said the NPS considers relocating about 20 to 25 administrative staff from the battlefield visitors center to a downtown Gettysburg site in the historic district. A 10 to 20 year lease is expected, with space around 2,560 square feet and parking as a key criterion, subject to GSA bid outcomes and borough collaboration.
EPA engineer Frank Vavra outlined a two site remediation near Gettysburg Adams County with limited action at the Westinghouse site this summer and design work by the Army Corps of Engineers costing about 1 million dollars. Hunterstown will need an artificial wetlands and the overall cleanup could run about 9 million dollars with design taking 12 to 18 months. Public comments are due by March 6.
