The Gettysburg Times runs a feature on Bermudian Springs Elementary today as part of its "Between classes" series. The paper also notes plans to profile Bermudian Springs Middle School on Thursday and the high school on Friday.
Gov. Ridge nominated Dr. Peter Jannetta, head of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, to be Pennsylvania health secretary. The Senate must confirm, and Jannetta plans to keep a limited clinical practice while recusing from University of Pittsburgh matters. He is 62 and has led the department since 1971.
The board reviewed a pilot Saturday school detention plan offering four hours of activity two hours academic work and two hours service projects aimed at reducing in school suspensions. Officials cite rising parent support and falling referrals though costs are a concern at about twenty dollars per hour per staff member.
Fairfield Area School Board unanimously rejects starting a high school football program for the 1995-96 budget. The decision followed Feb 13 committee talks citing small student body, facilities and staff limits, and startup costs up to 300000. Several residents opposed the plan citing budget strains and band costs.
Biglerville Borough Council held a special meeting with East York Street property owners to discuss a Pa DOT plan to mill and resurface the street and require curbs and sidewalks. Officials say the most economical path is owner contracted work, with a June 1 1995 deadline and building permits required. inspectors will monitor compliance, and most properties will face sidewalk installation if none exists.
Littlestown schools fail to secure a vote on a $900,000 plan to upgrade computer hardware software and curriculum. Director Urban proposed a three year budget while President Legutko balked at prioritizing an Integrated Learning System for K through eighth grade. The board will reconvene next month with community members added to the committee.
York Springs Borough Council discusses possible acceptable uses for the vacant two story elementary school on Main Street. Options include keeping the building or partitioning and selling part of the property with proposals due to the borough office. Council also filled planning and zoning posts and seeks a resident for the zoning hearing board.
