Battlefield Tower owners plot carnival and haunted tower plans

Thomas R. Ottenstein of Overview Limited Partnership announced expansion at the six acre Cumberland Township site near Soldiers' National Cemetery. The plan includes a carnival arcade, neon lights, and a possible Haunted Tower in October, with a May 1 deadline from the National Park Service to seal a sale or the tower will not be sold.

Man accused of killing brother faces separate trials

Mark Spotz 23 of Clearfield County will stand separate trials for the January 31 killing of his brother Dustin at their mother’s Chestnut Grove home and for three other women’s deaths while he was at large. Prosecutors in Clearfield Schuylkill York and Cumberland counties agreed to split the cases, with death penalty possible in Schuylkill and Cumberland counties but not sought for the brother’s murder. Authorities say Spotz was at large between Jan 31 and Feb 3 and was arrested Feb 3 in a Cumberland County motel. He has not been charged in the fourth death.

Adams County commissioner Weaver seeks re election

Adams County Commissioner Thomas J. Weaver announced in McSherrystown he will seek re election in May's primary. The Democratic incumbent praised four years of progress in land use planning solid waste management economic development and agricultural land preservation while noting intergovernmental cooperation and a pledge of open government. He credited colleagues Harry Stokes and Dick Waybright for success and highlighted fiscal and management reforms by the board.

Adams County forms Southeast transportation study panel

The Adams County Commissioners appointed 15 citizens to a steering committee for the Southeast Adams Transportation Study. The group will advise on traffic growth in Littlestown McSherrystown and surrounding areas by coordinating planning with local towns and school districts. The first meeting is set for later this month.

Upper Adams Middle School opens as candy free zone

Upper Adams Middle School began classes in the renovated Biglerville site housing about 320 students. Principal Robert Shuey notes a smooth transition with stricter rules than the high school, a candy free zone, and dedicated seventh and eighth grade teachers amid ongoing moves.
