Youth and Children's Agency Aids Growing County Caseload

Adams County Children and Youth Services reports 35 to 30 new families consult monthly with 10 percent facing abuse issues. Speakers at Christ Lutheran Church discuss the agency's shift toward older children, foster care, and in-home services. Veterans miss chance for local honor roll plaques

Alexander F. Wilkie reports the Adams County VA office is compiling a Vietnam and Korea War honor roll but many veterans have not registered. Of 2,110 Koreans listed nationwide, only 954 from Adams County have registered, and just 124 Vietnam era veterans have notified. The plaques will hang in the Old Courthouse first floor as commissioners note the rift over the war may deter names.

Stovepipe starts house fire kills two children in Hampton

A curtain ignited by a stovepipe caused a house blaze that killed eight year old William Andrew Martin and ten year old Teri Agnas Martin of New Oxford. Fire officials say the stove was installed correctly and no malfunction occurred. The fire at the John and Linda Martin residence near Hampton left both children in bed on the second floor as flames and smoke spread. Firefighters arrived quickly, faced heavy smoke, and could not reach the children until the blaze was under control about 30 minutes after the alarm. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at St Joseph's Church in Bonneauville.
