Adams County eyes female jail to ease crowding

The Adams County Commission proposes a state funded start up and first year operations for a residential center for non violent female offenders. The plan requests 252 523 dollars from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency to address crowding and reduce unstructured incarceration.

County plans road show on Adams County update

County hosts a seven meeting road show to gather input on revising Adams County comprehensive plan. The fourth session tonight at Gettysburg Junior High follows earlier meetings in York Springs Biglerville and Fairfield with 50 to 60 attendees.

County reshuffles CDBG funds for 1987 projects

Adams County commissioners approve redistributing leftover 1987 Community Development Block Grant funds. Of 232680 received, 27484.23 remains and will be split between two boroughs and two county accounts. Extra 10000 allocated to Arendtsville sewer plant. 7000 reserved for updating a comprehensive plan. Remaining funds move to General Program Administration. Abbottstown sewer hookup demand may shift funds. deadline extended to March 7 and final.

Law may keep farmers pockets green in Adams County

Adams County faces the 16 year old Clean and Green Act 319 of 1974 providing tax relief and working capital for farmers in development threatened areas. Tax Assessor Barb Walter says about 4,000 properties may qualify and explains the production value based relief and mapping driven reassessment using soil-type data to compute local tax rates.

Ann Nevins Dies At 92 Longtime Gettysburg Resident

Ann Stacy Nevins 92 of 741 Chambersburg Road Gettysburg died Wednesday February 14 at Michael Manor Convalescent Home. Born Springfield Illinois she was the widow of Gen Arthur 8 Nevins who died in 1879. She moved to Gettysburg in the 1950s when Nevins became superintendent of the Eisenhower Farm. She worked with the Red Cross during World War I and served in numerous civic groups including the Army Relief Gettysburg College Sub League and the Eisenhower Society. Survived by daughter Dr Mary Ann Radzinowicz of Cornell University Ithaca New York two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral 2 pm Monday at Gettysburg Presbyterian Church. Interment Gettysburg National Cemetery. Memorials to Gettysburg College Gettysburg PA. Monahan Funeral Home is in charge.

AIDS patient Richard Carper RAMPS up anti AIDS message

Richard Carper, a 36 year old former intravenous drug user diagnosed with AIDS in 1986, tells Gettysburg College students that the disease could wipe out a generation if people do not discuss sex and behavior. Wee Care Learning Center weighs move to 1270 Fairfield Road

Wee Care officials said no firm contract exists to relocate to the Sites Realty Building at 1270 Fairfield Road Cumberland Township though negotiations are ongoing. The center serves about 80 children and cites need for more space for infants and toddlers. The transportation question arose at a Gettysburg school board meeting with a request for free bus service for 30 students if the move occurs.
