New York Firm Wins Migrant Care Contract in Pennsylvania

Rural New York Farm Workers Opportunities Inc. of Rochester won a nine month contract to administer Section 303 Title TH funds of CETA for all of Pennsylvania. The firm beat Farm Workers Corporation of New Jersey and a North Carolina group bidding for the work. The program covers work experience employment services and supportive services with a total cost around 1.25 million dollars. Aronson said the delay in written confirmation from the Labor Department is due to holiday schedules.

Adams County welcomes 33-year-old commissioner Tom Collins

Newly appointed Adams County Commissioner Thomas L Collins, 33, comes from Gettysburg, where he taught and ran a painting contractor business and served on the School Board. He starts Jan. 2, resigning his board post to focus on county duties, aiming to bring fresh ideas and youth into government. He cites education and business experience as strengths and says he plans to push for progress with fellow commissioner Robert Kiunk.

Fire crews respond to Center alarm. no fire found

Firemen from Abbottstown New Oxford and East Berlin were sent with ambulances and gear to a automatic alarm at the Children’s Developmental Center on Route 30 west of Cross Keys. First Assistant Abbottstown Fire Chief Harry Moul said a thorough check found no fire, attributing the alarm to a malfunction. In a separate incident Pernille firefighters found crackers burning in an oven at Bertha Michael’s home on Hershey Heights Road. Fire Chief Francis Sties said Michael likely bumped the oven switch. the fire was confined to the oven and smoke cleared after crews worked.

Westminster Faces Route 140 Renumbering Plan

Maryland officials consider renaming Route 140 from Reisertown to Westminster as Route 140i with plans for a briefing between Westminster Chamber of Commerce leaders and the state planning office. Business leaders oppose the change citing identity ties to Route 10 and costs of updating signs maps and brochures. If approved the change would likely take effect late January or early February.

Judge Kreider Says Battlefield Tower Must Pay Amusement Tax

The National Battlefield Tower must pay Cumberland Township a seven percent admissions tax retroactive to July 1976. Judge Homer L. Kreider ruled the tower qualifies as an amusement despite claimed educational benefits, ordering Over view Limited Partnership to pay back taxes potentially totaling about $58,000. The tower owners faced a five day Adams County hearing. township officials hailed the decision though appeals could follow.

State Trooper Slightly Hurt in Crash Of Cruiser And Van

A state trooper was slightly injured when a van pulled into his cruiser at Rt 30 and Blue Ribbon Road near McKnightstown at 1 35 PM Wednesday. Trooper Theodore F Kotula Jr 45 of Gettysburg R complained of neck pains but did not seek treatment. The van driver Eugene P Jennson 27 Biglerville R 2 was unhurt. Four people were injured in a second two car crash on New Chester Road near New Oxford with John Todt 28 New Oxford R 2 admitted to Hanover Hospital with a fractured leg. Kerry Crouse 22 Littlestown R 2 Ralhthy Crouse 20 Littlestown F 2 and Linda Klark 23 Berlin Ave New Oxford treated and released. All injured transported by New Oxford Fire Company ambulance. New Oxford firemen assisted at scene. The Todt car ran out of control striking a utility pole and tipping. Moments later Crouse’s car collided with Todt’s car.

79 Year Old Man Hurt In Hanover Area Crash

A two car collision south of Cross Keys at 6 p.m. injured 79 year old Eugene Miller who was a passenger in Arthur Miller's car. Miller received forehead bruises and was treated then released from Hanover Hospital. Both vehicles sustained moderate damage.

Liberian Guest Inspires Gettysburg Farmers Visit

Farmer father and daughter from Gettysburg journeyed to Liberia to meet Senkon Tenmeh, a Liberian farmer adopting American methods to boost nutrition. Tenmeh learned to apply efficient farming, cutting slash and burn and clearing farmland. Susan Waybright and Richard C. Warbright hosted the visit, with local church groups aiding Tehmeh’s stay and exchange of agricultural knowledge.
