A morning forecast shows clearing conditions with a high in the lower 30s and west winds 5 to 10 mph. Tonight remains mostly clear with a mid teens low. Thursday brings partly cloudy skies and a high near 30, with mid teens overnight. Friday stays partly cloudy with highs in the mid to upper 20s and Christmas Day for 30 to 35. Sunday includes a chance of snow flurries with 20 to 25 low and 35 to 40 high.
The Gettysburg Times says the Carlisle Street office will open 11 to 1 today and close Thursday and Friday for the holiday. The Fairfield Road main office will be open today and Thursday and closed Friday Christmas Eve. both will resume regular hours Monday, Dec 27.
Motorists in Gettysburg faced delays Tuesday morning as PennDOT finished removing ridges from the Chambersburg Street pavement. Borough Manager Charles Sterner said rain on Monday pushed the project back, with further work planned on York Street.SPACE CENTER Houston AP Space shuttle Discovery and its astronauts captured the broken Hubble Space Telescope on Tuesday for a service call 370 miles above Earth. We have Hubble grappled French astronaut Jean-Francois Clervoy reported after snaring the telescope with the shuttle robot arm. Mission Control congratulated the crew on a first class job.
A harsh statewide drought cut corn yields by 33 percent and soybeans by 36 percent, with southeastern Pennsylvania facing losses up to 100 percent. Estimated farm losses range from 500 to 700 million dollars as farmers adapt by higher feed costs, delayed purchases, and reduced staffing. The drought ended in September after Hurricane Floyd rains, but relief remains gradual for farmers like Abe Harpster of Evergreen Farms.
Adams County will receive about 240000 in federal Transportation Enhancement funds under new PennDOT rules that base allocations on area and population rather than proposal appeal. The $3.9 million request by Gettysburg Borough Gettysburg College and Friends of the National Parks at Gettysburg would have funded improvements along the Route 97 corridor to Stevens Hall, but funding now favors size over project desirability.
Gettysburg school officials approve a $51 971 Safe Schools Initiative grant to train staff and fund peer mediation at Middle School and Lincoln Elementary. The plan includes an elementary responsive classroom for early social skills and anti violence curriculum materials for the high school with safety hardware.
Jeffrey Sanders a 58 year old Towson State University instructor from York County launched a bid for the Adams York congressional seat. He vows to offer voters a real choice and limit donations to local funds. Sanders has prior service as a school board president and previously sought the 93rd state seat in 1998. He notes Pennsylvania roots and a Gettysburg tie as he enters the federal campaign.
The State Department issued a new worldwide warning that Americans may face terrorist attacks during the New Year period. Airport security is being tightened as authorities warn crowds at religious festivals or millennial events could be targeted. Authorities cited raids in Jordan and said attacks may still be planned elsewhere, with credibility notes and an ongoing counterterrorism operation.
