Wenksville Couple Celebrates 45th Wedding Anniversary

Mr and Mrs G P Smith of Wenksville marked forty five years since their December 20 1894 wedding at the Arendtsville Lutheran parsonage. The couple long resided near Wenksville with Mr Smith serving as Arendtsville National Bank director and janitor of Wenksville Lutheran Church for 43 years. Mrs Smith taught Sunday school beginners and primaries for nearly 45 years. A birth notice lists a daughter born this morning at Warvier Hospital to Mr and Mrs Theodore Galladay of Tinetown.

Christmas Mail Breaks Records At Gettysburg Post Office

Postmaster G A Williams said the Gettysburg post office saw its busiest Christmas season with extra clerks and parcel postmen handling sacks of mail for peak delivery. On Thursday about 28 000 pieces of mail were cancelled and daily activity rose to around 4 000 106 000. December receipts through Thursday evening were about 20 percent above the same period in 1938.

Cows Under November Test in Adams County Herds

In November the Adams County Davy Herd Improvement Association reported 410 cows total across 24 members. The record lists milk production with several cows hitting 1000 and 1200 pounds monthly and several over 40 pounds butterfat. Winners by herd include Roy Bream, Mrs. Mabel Walker Willebraart, Allen Welker, Grover Yingling, Emory Gitt, George Motler, Levin Hostetter, Mrs. Rose Murrin, among others.

Measles Quarantine Hits Barrow Alaska Christmas

Barrow Alaska imposes a Christmas quarantine with all church and school programs cancelled. Every home posted signs as the measles outbreak prevents distribution of holiday visits. Population exceeds 200, but the exact case count was not disclosed.

Quarantine Issued For Starlet Fever In Butler Township

In Butler Township Biglerville R. 2 home of Marshall Longanecker a quarantine was ordered by Adams County health officer William J Shields after a four year old daughter June Longanecker fell ill with starlet fever. The family residence was placed under quarantine this morning.

Berlin Train Wreck Kills 70 on Christmas Eve

Berlin December 22 AP Two passenger trains crowded with Christmas travelers collided in a sta iler at Genthin about 45 miles southwest of Berlin. The Herlin Neukirchen Express plowed into the Berlin Cologne train as it halted. Seventy dead and about 168 injured in the worst of a series of German rail disasters.

Estate Bonds Filed In Two Kentucky Estates

Two estate bonds were filed Thursday afternoon at the office of Register Quintin D. Robert. In the Elsie M. Spangler estate in Huntingdon township, George VI. Spangler and Gardner R. D. led the bond as administrators. In the John E. Bair estate, Edith N. Bair filed as administrator for the widow.

Mrs F B Cranes Mother Critical After Accident

Mrs Mary Phillips of Atglen and her husband Charles G Philips injured when their car collided with a silage truck on a foggy Burk Run highway near Cogiesville. Mrs Phillips suffered a fractured skull and was listed as critical though improved, while Mr Philips had brush burns. The couple, well known in Gettysburg, visited recently with their son Rev Frederick Crane of Hunington and daughter, former pastor Rev Mr Crane. Hospital reports list various local patients admitted or discharged at Warner hospital including Gettysburg and Emmitsburg residents.

Rebekahs Hold Party for Kiddies in LOOP

Rebekah lodge held its annual Christmas kiddie party Thursday evening in LOOP hall Center Square with four members and children attending. Carol Service at Cashtown Tonight With Slides and Choir

Junior Red Cross gifts brighten Adams County children

Miss Margaret McIhenny leads about 7,500 county junior members in producing hundreds of colorful gifts for hospitals, orphanages, and jails. Nearly 140 schools contributed toys, cradles, baskets, and trinkets fashioned from cans, nutshells, and other scraps, with total gifts approaching four thousand as packing continues for delivery to Mont Alto Hospital, HarrisburgSylvan Heights, Loysville Treysler Home, Abbottstown Paradise Protectory, Elizabethtown Crippled Children Hospital, and other sites.

Gettysburg firemen host Kiddies Christmas party tonight

Gettysburg fire company will stage its annual Kiddies Christmas party at 7 p.m. at the engine house on East Middle street. About 1200 to 1400 half pound candy boxes and many oranges will be distributed to Gettysburg youngsters aged 12 and under. The remaining 2200 candy boxes and oranges will be given out by local firemen tomorrow at the hospital and orphan home locations.

Emmitsburg Widows Die In 24 Hours In 1930s Report

Two elderly Emmitsburg widows aged 80 and 74 died within a day from complications of diseases. Elias Knippie, 88, retired farmer, died Thursday morning. Annie Catherine Florence Florence, 30, widow of Sebastian Florence, died Thursday afternoon at Hay Notne near Eas Musbury. Surviving relatives include six sons and daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Funeral services at St Joseph's Emmitsburg. Interment in church cemetery. Also listed are Mary Margaret Jordan, 74, widow of John Jordan, dying from multiple diseases. Funeral from St Joseph's with Rev Fr Rogers. Interment in church cemetery. Paris Span Collapse Causes Casualties on River Bridge

Police report a heavy barge struck the bridge near the cathedral in Paris causing the span to collapse. A gas main explosion followed, sending pedestrians and vehicles into the river. At least two dead, five rescued, about 13 unaccounted.

Adams County Board of School Directors approved the forty-ninth annual convention of the School Directors Association to be held Friday January 26 1940 at Gettysburg High School auditorium.
