City dwellers more likely to be crime victims than suburbs

Washington reports Justice Department analysis of 1983 crime data shows city residents twice as likely to be crime victims as suburban residents. The Bureau of Justice Statistics notes 12 percent of suburban violent crimes occurred in nearby cities, while 5 percent of suburban violent crimes involved city residents.

Economists See 1987 Recession Risk Amid Budget Law

The National Association of Business Economists says 85 percent of its 300 members expect a recession by end of 1987. Only 15 percent doubt the current recovery, now in its fourth year, will extend beyond 1987.

Washington AP reports Christmas tree sellers raise prices only modestly with a 2 to 3 percent average increase. Keith E. Jacob of the Minnesota Christmas Tree Growers Association says growers hold the line as consumers have limited dollars. In Minnesota a 6 foot Scotch pine may cost 18 to 25 dollars, with regional variation noted.

Syria deploys Soviet missiles along Lebanon border

Reagan mourns 248 101st Airborne deaths at Fort Campbell

President Reagan led a national mourning for 248 members of the 101st Airborne Division killed in a DC-8 crash near Gander Newfoundland as they returned from Sinai peacekeeping duties. Families and mourners gathered in Clarksville Tennessee and Fort Campbell. The first bodies were to be flown to Dover Air Force Base for identifications.

Canadian investigators review takeoff of doomed Arrow flight

Canadian Aviation Safety Board investigators said the four engine DC-8 carrying 248 soldiers and eight crew bodies reached 190 mph at takeoff, then veered right and slowed before crashing into rocky terrain near Gander Newfoundland. They will publish a report and hold hearings early next year to determine the cause.

Pentagon wins approval to build chemical weapons since 1969

The agreement allows a new binary chemical weapon program for the Army and halts further anti-satellite ASAT testing. It ends the long House opposition to chemical weapons while keeping an ASAT test ban to counter Soviet bargaining in nuclear arms talks.
