Desert Shield medic writes home from Saudi Arabia

Army Sgt. Kenry Johnston, a 25 year old medic with the 101st Airborne from Fort Campbell, writes to her parents from Saudi Arabia detailing medical missions, the harsh desert landscape, and her desire for home and pizza from Mamma's Pizza in Biglerville. The letters, dated early October to late October, reveal her optimism amid a large multinational operation described as Desert Shield with tens of thousands of U.S. personnel in the gulf and more expected by mid January.

Desert Shield salute to Specialist Kevin Mummert

The Times salutes Specialist Kevin Mummert and all those serving in the Middle East. His mother Sharon Mummert of Gettysburg recalls his Oct 18 phone call and notes the Desert Shield food and laundry program Grub and Scrub run by two Americans helping soldiers overseas. Mummert, a 1987 Gettysburg High School graduate, enlisted in 1987 and is stationed in the Middle East repairing radios and equipment.

Last flight of hostages returns from Middle East

Nearly 50 Western hostages freed from Iraq and Kuwait touched down in the United States, led by U.S. diplomats including ambassador Nathaniel Howell. Secretary Baker saluted their ordeal and urged continued support for Kuwait. Howell said the Kuwait embassy will reopen with new staff as others prepared to depart.

Pa. hostage survivor returns home from Iraq ordeal

Tom Lurenta of Schwenksville after four months in Iraqi captivity at the U.S. Embassy and embassy residence in Baghdad says he believed he would be freed. He left Iraq Tuesday and arrived in the United States with other hostages as the ambassador to Kuwait evacuated Westerners. The episode followed Saddam Hussein’s orders to close foreign missions in Kuwait and halt embassy services, with diplomats finally departing after ensuring Americans could depart safely.

European Community pledges $1 billion aid to USSR summit

European Community leaders approved a $1 billion food aid package for the Soviet Union and drafted a gulf crisis statement as they launch a 12 nation drive toward unity. They backed a two year $1.4 billion technical aid plan for 1991 92 to assist energy transport and telecoms and discussed Eastern Europe economic woes.
