Gettysburg College Trustees weigh a plan to allocate 15 000 of 115 000 set aside for athlete grants as above need aid with a maximum 600 per recipient over four years. Faculty, IFC, Chapel Council, and Student Senate oppose. debate continues.
Five college students from Gettysburg College and a Lancaster family of five, on a Central Pennsylvania Consortium semester program, are reported safe in India. Dr. Arden K. Smith says the group will depart Mysore December 15, reach Bombay the 18th and leave for London on the 19th. He notes Bombay has seen only fireworks reports and no actual bombs, with U.S. officials in contact and Keating and Bombay counsel informed.
In Belfast on the Shankill Road a furniture store exploded as Christmas shoppers screamed in terror. Police said two killed, with the death toll rising. survivors and injured were pulled from rubble as ambulances ferried the wounded to hospitals.
The York Adams Mental Health Mental Retardation program must trim about nine percent for the remainder of the fiscal year after the state allocates 1 094 000 plus 77 000 from two counties to total 1 172 000. The budget was 1 279 000 with five months spent. The MHMR board will decide where to cut in the last seven months. administrator Darrell M Nixdorff said negotiations continue with Warner Hospital to establish a detention area for psychiatry.

Cashtown Fire Department searched a fogbound mountain southwest of Cashtown for a missing 23 year old hunter after his father-in-law called at 6 50 p m. About a dozen firefighters spent an hour locating him along a mountain road. The hunter, unharmed, had been communicating by two way walkie talkies but fog prevented a proper meeting point.
At the Adams Electric Cooperative first annual service awards banquet held at the Elks Home, three men affiliated with the co op received 20 year service emblems. W Kyle Trout presented the awards to Daniel E Teeter attorney Howard Schwartz director and Robert M Smith office manager.
The Gettysburg Junior High Chorus presents its annual Christmas program next Wednesday at 2 30 P M in the H Edgar Riegel auditorium under L Theodore Gilbert. Selections include He Is Born a French carol Love Came Down As Christmas A Christmas Gift and Christmas is Coming a festive cantata. Clyde Mummert will lead the Junior High School orchestra in two numbers March of the Toys and Christmas March. Robert Boehner president of the Student Council will narrate. Elizabeth Township Allegheny County reports the death of Peter Maund 25 of New Galilee an off duty state trooper assigned to Beaver County He was married with a son and was the son of Lt Pete Maund juvenile officer for McKeesport Police This bulletin also notes continued coverage of major life insurance companies on page two.
Only 600 has been raised in the first week to supply Christmas joy to 1100 persons in 225 families. The collection office is at the library in the Presbyterian Church and open daily 12 30 to 4. Checks payable to Holiday Bureau. Toys can be brought to the Fellowship Hall starting Monday.
Gettysburg College forms a Nader Raider student public interest group after Ralph Nader's address. A steering committee led by Cheri Walker and others plans campus organizing to back self reliant advocates on environmental, consumer, and corporate responsibility issues with intent to expand to southern central colleges next.
Mrs. Victoria L. Schartiger 67 of Gettysburg R 5 died Friday afternoon at Warner Hospital shortly after arriving by Bislerville firemen’s ambulance. Ill at Carroll Shoe Co Arendtsville where she worked she had been under a physician’s care. Survived by husband Lester, a son Lester T. Schartiger and a daughter Mrs. Paul Fissel, plus three sisters and several grandchildren. Funeral Tuesday 2 pm at Gettysburg Foursquare Gospel Church with Rev Powers and Rev Myers. burial Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call Peters Funeral Home Carlisle Street Monday 7 to 9 pm.
Paul A Bloser 80 of Chambersburg Street died Friday evening at Warner Hospital after being stricken on Chambersburg Street. He was a prominent Philadelphia and New Jersey commercial artist who moved to Gettysburg in 1970 after his wife Margithe McIntyre died. Survived by nieces and nephews, services Monday at 1 with Rev Carl Berkebay. burial in Collingswood. Also notes a Heistown Cub Pack meeting Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Hunterstown Community Center inviting boys and parents to join.
The Greenmount Supervisors adopted an ordinance increasing lot size in new subdivisions from fractions of an acre to one acre, effective immediately, citing drainage issues. Meeting at the Greenmount Firehall they advertised the ordinance and argued for the change. They also agreed to raise compensation to Liberty Two for police radio use in Officer Albert Pecher’s car to cover radio costs, though the exact fee is not yet set.
Adams Electric Cooperative held its first annual service award meeting Friday to honor 115 directors, employees, and guests for years of service. Attendees included Attorney Teeter and W. Kyle Trout, who presented awards ranging from five to thirty years. Also note: newsprint prices rise five percent to $168 per ton effective December 4, per International Paper Company.
State funds will be withheld from the Bonneauville Fire Company after an audit revealed misappropriation by former treasurer Francis V. Straub Jr. The Adams County investigation found a $210 transfer misused to the Bonneauville Community Fire Company Relief Fund. Bohrman, named in the audit, is believed to have left the state. Three injuries were also reported in separate crashes on Emmitsburg Road and Route 11.
Gettysburg Lions to host annual kiddies Christmas party at the Holiday Inn Monday at six. Santa will visit the meeting with gifts for youngsters as the club holds its final meeting of the year.
President Nixon signed a broad tax bill described as a Christmas tree with something for all. It cuts individual and corporate taxes by 15.8 billion dollars over three years and makes about three million new car buyers eligible for refunds averaging around 200 dollars. The bill repeals the 7 percent automobile excise tax and starts features aimed at spurring the economy. A campaign-finance provision lets taxpayers earmark part of their taxes for a party or a general fund, with a delayed start and possible repeal later.
Adaing County commissioners directed cashing a 50 000 certificate of deposit, authorized 850 000 to bolster the general fund, and approved payments from county aid funds to Hamiltonian Township, York Springs, and Cumberland Township for road work. A tax equalization report for October was received. the courthouse will close December 24-25 and December 31-January 1 for holidays.
