NASA antennas failed to hear a signal Sunday from the Mars Polar Lander after three days of silence. Mission officials led by Richard Cook warned time was running out and noted frustration and rising tension as teams pursued simple failure checks while preparing for tougher scenarios. If no contact is established by mid week, likelihood of recovery diminishes and complex failure paths loom. The $165 million lander was due to signal immediately after a Friday touchdown about 500 miles from Mars south pole, with Mars Climate Orbiter losses still casting a shadow.
NASA plans a continuing Mars program despite the loss of an orbiter in September and a Polar Lander still uncontacted. For a third day, signals to Earth from the lander failed though engineers say a safe landing is possible. Since 1996 orbiters and landers have launched every 26 months to study climate history geology water and prepare for sample return.
Greensburg report notes Pennsylvania deaths per 100 000 miles fell from 2.4 in 1958 to 1.5 last year with 1 486 deaths. Nationwide traffic deaths declined to 41 200 with 7 090 fewer than 1998 and 10 000 fewer than 1978. Experts cite multiple factors including safer guardrails and cross state adoption of safety innovations.
