Adams County readies for a county program that will start January 1 with banks in the county cooperating to sell food stamps and cash them when returned by stores. Public Assistance plans set a December meeting to finalize eligibility criteria and banking cooperation.
Dr Leonard L Potter was elected president of the Adams County Medical Society at a meeting held Wednesday at Warner Hospital. Dr Bruce N Wolff was named president elect, Dr Harold Closson reelected secretary treasurer, and Dr W North Sterret of Arendisville named to the board of censors.
James Weikert was re elected president of the Gettysburg Fire Department at its meeting. Officers named include Thomas Wisotzkey as vice president Daniel Stonesifer as secretary Daniel Hilliard as treasurer and Joseph Saum as chaplain. Temperatures here sank to an overnight low of 19 degrees with unofficial rural readings of 15.
State Police report a 5:45 AM Route 30 crash near Cherry's Drive Inn six miles west of here. Louis Benedict, 71, of Waynesboro, attempted to enter the lot in a pickup and struck Richard Deardorff backing a car, sending Deardorff’s sedan into a large drive-in sign. Damages total about 1000 to the Ford, 25 to Benedict’s pickup, and 400 to the sign.
Othmar Carli, Gettysburg artist and York Academy of Art professor, produced a six color serigraph of the Dobbin House on Steinwehr Ave. Proceeds benefit Adams County Public Library with fifty percent of profits after costs. Limited edition of 75, prices range 30 to 50 dollars including framing. Distribution begins at the library and Dobbin House during a Handcrafters sale.
Capt. Paul H. Fritz, son of Col. Ret. and Mrs. William D. Fritz, has earned the Bronze Star and Army Commendation Medal along with the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Silver Star for actions in Vietnam last year. He is on 30 day leave at his parents’ home before reporting to the Pentagon for Defense Intelligence Agency duty.
The 1972 election cycle begins as registration rolls reopen following the November vote. Adams County has 34 491 eligible adults, about 63 percent registered, with only half of them voting in November. The last day to register is March 6, petitions for the April 25 primary may be circulated January 25 and must be filed by February 15.

Cambodian troops evacuated Baray 60 miles northeast of Phnom Penh after heavy fighting with the North Vietnamese 9th Division. Soldiers retreated 12 miles north through rice paddies toward Taing Krasaing as Kompong Thinaran and Kompong Thmar faced ongoing clashes. The loss marks the worst defeat for the government in its 20 month war with North Vietnam and Viet Cong. US B S2 and A 377 bombers supported slowing the onslaught along the Mekong western flank.
State police report a 23 year old driver Joanna Joyce Miller Gettysburg R. 4 skidded on ice three miles east of town at 10 30 a m and struck a mail box on the Frank Ruth property Gettysburg R 5 causing 300 damage to Miller's 1969 Chevrolet and to Ruths mailbox.
Capt Paul H. Fritz receives the Bronze Star Medal from Capt John Cushman commanding Delta Regional Assistance Command for service in South Vietnam. The ceremony is depicted with Cushman presenting the award to Fritz.
The new state reclamation law may have limited impact in Adams County as quarries like Bethlehem Mines may face large pits near Rt. 94. Company officials say operations may resume, while others such as Tester Stone report no current effect due to ongoing production. The law allows reuse of pits for purposes like swimming if reclamation is completed.
The Ladies' Prayer Breakfast features Grover C. Gouker Jr. of Hanover as speaker. He is a Dale Carnegie Course representative and instructor, known for giving about 200 speeches yearly. The event is Saturday at 7:30 am at the Lampost Tea Room on Carlisle Street.
Charles W. Mayhall of Gettysburg retires after nearly 41 years with Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania. He joined in 1939 and leaves as a gang foreman. A Gettysburg resident, WWII veteran with four battle stars, he was born in Shinnerton West Virginia and is survived by two late brothers who also worked for Columbia. He plans hunting and fishing in retirement.
State Sen. George N. Wade and Mrs Wade and State GOP Committeeman Fred G Pfeffer and Mrs Pfeffer headlined the Adams County Council of Republican Women Christmas banquet. Thirty women attended at Lamp Post Tea Room in Carlisle Street with Pfeffer speaking on his duties and Carroll Santas in attendance.
Gettysburg VFW will hold its annual children's Christmas party at the post home on Middle Street on December 18. Commander Eugene R. Miller announced the event after a post meeting. The post also voted a $25 donation to become a life member of the VFW National Home at Eaton Rapids Michigan to fund operations and qualify the post for one vote in the National Home Council. A donation was made to the York Adams Respiratory fund for Christmas seats. Four board members will be elected at the January 3 meeting.
The Lincoln Intermediate Unit 12 board will hold a meeting at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the board room of the Adam County National Bank North office.
Charles W. Wishard 39 York Springs R2 died at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at 12 15 PM. He owned milk tankers with his brother in law Philip Aldinger hauling milk from area farms to dairies. Survived by wife Arlene parents Ernest and Beulah Wishard son Gregory one brother Howard Wishard Gettysburg one sister Mrs Philip Aldinger York Springs R2. Officials of the 1972 Adams County United Fund campaign call an Operation Wind-up to close the drive and reach the $100,000 goal for the first time. Campaign director Henry O Heiser says the effort will wrap up by December 13 and urge a telephone drive and a final ad in The Gettysburg Times with a coupon for last minute contributions.

In Saigon a missing helicopter with 33 American soldiers is reportedly sighted wreckage with 10 bodies confirmed and no survivors yet.
