Timothy A. Berwager outlines Adams County SPCA shelter efforts to handle about 3,500 homeless animals annually. The facility, scheduled to open around Sept 1, will operate year round to accept stray, lost, or unwanted animals and seek homes, with a goal of reducing animal dumping.
Katherine E. Barnes, 23, a motion picture film editor and former NYU graduate student, created a 45 minute student film from seven shots. Directed by Harriet Aaron, it included Barnes’s recorded sound and a soundtrack by her brother Edward. The Motion Picture Academy awarded it Best Student Produced Narrative Film in 1978.
Pennsylvania Republican William Goodling joins a House panel probing reports of alleged Zaire official profiteering in the Food For Peace program. GAO study expected to show reforms, though subcommittee leaders push for early inquiry before recess. Mobutu regime stance and U.S. financial ties add political complexity to the probe.
In Waynesboro Pennsylvania an emotional hearing on welfare reform heard taxpayers support mandatory work for able bodied recipients. A pregnant woman described welfare checks surpassing earned income and taxes. A speaker recalled Roosevelt era WPA and urged work requirements for about 81000 welfare recipients to repay grants.
The Pennsylvania Travel Industry met in Hershey to plan future tourism strategy. Bettina C. McGarvey announced James M. Cole of the Gettysburg Travel Council as chairman of the advertising and public relations committee, directing ad programs across 64 county organizations. Harry M. Riesendahl urged unity to strengthen the industry.
A car wash to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy will run 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Texaco station on Steinwehr Ave sponsored by McDonald's. The Chamber of Commerce runs the station and donates facilities. Exterior wash two dollars and interior vacuuming. If rain, event postponed.
Peters Orchards near York Springs hosts a Farm City open house during National Farm City week. The Adams County Agricultural Council sponsors the tour from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with free refreshments and fruit queen hostesses. Glenn Miller notes the tour highlights the fruit industry and showcases orchard layout spraying and harvesting practices. A dinner meeting with a prominent speaker will be held later in Farm City Week to promote farmer and non farmer understanding of farming methods.
The 1979 edition of the County Human Services Guide is complete and ready for distribution. It covers 45 social service, health and welfare agencies with details on structure services eligibility funding and numbers. Copies are being distributed to ACCCS members and can be purchased from the United Way Office for $1.50.
Adams Rescue Mission reports repeated vandalism and pilferage at two charity collection boxes in Gettysburg causing removal of one box at A&P Supermarket lot. Locks and doors damaged, items stolen, furniture disappears, police notified but no full remedy. The remaining box may be removed if mischief continues.
A county ad hoc committee met with commissioners to discuss a small scale cooperative transport plan. It would start by serving three social service agencies for the mentally handicapped and elderly, coordinating services that stalled after Adams Transit System halted on a demonstration grant. County Planner John Callenbach notes a cautious, gradual approach, expanding only with solid evidence of practicality.
Tenants move into the Bonneauville Interfaith Gardens project as Adams County Interfaith Housing completes its second major venture. The 20 units match the New Oxford project and include eight elderly and twelve family units with rents set at 25 percent of income. Funding came from a $593,000 Farmers Home Administration loan and a $38,000 Pennsylvania Department of Community Affairs grant.
The South Central Community Action Program hosts a Community Action Anniversary Fair on August 21 and 23 adjacent to SCCAP offices at 40 East High Street Gettysburg. The event features carnival games, clowns, music, food stands, a yard sale, and numerous exhibits. Outreach plans raffled prizes including a smoked ham, radio, water slide pass, and dinners. Advance $1 tickets available via the Outreach Services office. Major participants include the West Orrtanna String Band, migrant worker band, Get tysburg Handcrafters Club, SCCAP Early Childhood Development and Wee Care, and the WIC puppet show.
