Residency lists form as the county nears 60 percent completion on its first public housing project. Waiting lists are being formed for potential tenants, with county housing officials guiding eligibility and distribution of units.
Theresa Greenlee, 17, daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward Greenlee, was chosen as Adams County Fire Queen from area contestants. Winners include Gettysburg Fire Dept queen Gauthier who won 1000. banner and trophy for first runner-up 419 for second runner-up. Other contestants hailed from Abbottstown, Fairfield, York Springs, and more, with judges Paul Vice President of Maryland State Firemens Association and Carol Young, sponsor. County queen committee organized with help from Ten Ganiz of Barlow.
The county firemen meet today to review finances for the year. Treasurer’s report shows total expenses at 215,977 71 with new worth of 37,697 33, including 31 10 in certificates of deposit and the remainder in savings. Memorial service part of today’s convention program.
Consumer Advocate Mark Wideff criticized Met-Ed for seeking a rate increase. He said the company has had options to adjust bills under earlier approved rates and urged the Public Utilities Commission to deny or modify the proposal. The complaint accompanies a formal filing outlining higher charges for heating customers.
Proceeds from Pet Inc stock held by Adams County Public Library will fund a capital improvement savings account. The board approved transferring 6006 from Bookmobile depreciation to the new account and authorized annual deposits equal to 1 percent of the operating budget.
The Gettysburg Area Recreation Department officially closed the season with its annual Watermelon party. Facilities at Eisenhower School and Recreation Park playgrounds shut down, including the Tot Lot at Eisenhower and the tennis program, evening basketball leagues, girls softball, Optimist baseball, and the park refreshment stand. Intergroups may submit picnic reservations for next year after 1 PM on September 5.
Contractors from Ts Construction Co of Cam will start a four mile upgrade on Route 34 in Cumberland County. The project covers sections from Gardners to near Aspers, with road widening, paving of shoulders, rail installation, and drainage work along the rebuilt corridor. The two year program includes prior and current contract work and drainage improvements.

A 12 year old Gettysburg girl Sandra G Shindledecker was treated at Warner Hospital for minor injuries after being struck crossing S Washington St by a vehicle operated by Inez Colon Bartow Florida The girl was transported to the hospital by police. A 1 speed bicycle was stolen near the Gettysburg College dining hall between 7 am and 2 15 pm. Curtis Naugle reported the loss valued at about 30 dollars.
Buford Avenue will be closed to traffic Monday and Tuesday nights from 11 PM to 7 AM for resurfacing. Adams County Asphalt Co. spokesman said Cham bersburg 5 to the borough line will be repaved with completion expected by 7 AM Wednesday.
The Adams County PennDOT maintenance office released a week long work plan for August. The Bridge Crew will repair a concrete gutter in New Oxford and replace deteriorating pipe on LR 01009 between Amatus and Pondtown Mil. They will patch Route 36 East and several local roads with hot mix and oil and asphalt emulsion. Route LR 01073 between Worley's Nursery and Bragtown and other local routes are included. Schedule may change due to weather. Superintendent C F Rinehart noted.
Adams County Tax Claim Bureau will hold a public sale September 11 at 10 a.m. in the county courthouse to collect about 332,763 in delinquent taxes due 1976 or earlier. The sale covers 196 properties across 28 municipalities with notable arrears in Charnita Carroll Valley and Liberty Township. Early payment can stop the sale and reduce costs. all sales are final.
The Adams County Republican Ox Roast Picnic takes place at South Mountain Fairgrounds on Saturday September 16 with games from 10 a.m. to 2 15 p.m. an obstacle course, an auction 3 30 to 4 4 p.m. and an ox roast dinner at 1 p.m. Tickets are available from committee members or by calling 332 8516.
