Weekend Weather Outlook With Pleasant Skies Ahead

Mostly sunny today with highs in the low 80s and a northwest wind around 10 mph. Tonight will be clear with lows in the mid to upper 50s. Thursday brings sun and near 80 degree highs. Friday and Saturday look fair with a chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday. Lows range from the low 50s to low 60s Friday through Saturday and in the 60s Sunday.

West wildfires rage across Idaho Oregon and Nevada

Firefighters battled to protect homes as forest fires forced hundreds to flee in Idaho Oregon and Nevada. The week sees more than 230000 acres burned with nearly 9000 firefighters active across California Washington Oregon Idaho and Nevada while Utah and Colorado fires remained mostly contained.

Congo Renames Nation Reverts to Belgian Congo Legacy

Zaire's national conference in Kinshasa voted to rename the country Congo again and discard the Sese Seko era. Delegates also chose to adopt the Belgian Congo flag and the anthem Congo Stand Up, signaling a shift toward historic roots and away from the president's rule.

PUC to hold power line hearings in eight locations

The Public Utility Commission schedules public hearings at Gettysburg and eight other sites on a proposed 500 kilovolt cross state line from Beaver County to Three Mile Island. Four utilities seek a $600 million project with hearings run by ALJ Robert Meehan, tests limited to issues of need, alternatives, safety, and environmental and economic impact.

Arendtsville educator Lewis Bosserman dies at 86

Lewis M. Bosserman of 168 Gordon Ave Gettysburg dies Tuesday at Hershey Medical Center at 86. A 65 year Fire Co member and life member of Adams County Retired Teachers Association, South Mountain Fair, Gettysburg Elks, and AARP. Former council member and church secretary, he taught in Butler Township and led Arendtsville schools for 16 years as principal then led Arendtsville Elementary for 24 years, retiring in 1971. Survived by daughter Linda Muller, four grandchildren, brother Donald Bosserman. services Friday at Monahan Funeral Home with burial Greenmount Cemetery. Yeakel Defends Single Issue Focusing on Specter

Democratic Senate candidate Lynn Yeakel told the Pennsylvania State Education Association leaders at Gettysburg College that if a single issue exists in her campaign it is Arlen Specter and retiring. She argued for new leadership, economic reform, and stronger public education while praising Women's Way and NEA goals. The endorsement decision between Yeakel and Specter was anticipated Wednesday evening.

Additional neighborhoods seek to join residential parking plan

Gettysburg residents consider adding Liberty and Stratton streets to the Residential Parking Permit program. Parking Manager William Little notes the plan rewards community support, requires majority block approval, and imposes two hour limits without permits. Fees include 12 dollars yearly, 1 dollar monthly prorate, and 2.50 for guest permits.

Hunt named assistant superintendent of Upper Adams district

Patricia Hunt has been named the assistant superintendent of the Upper Adams School District. Her duties include coordinating curriculum, staff development, district bus service and federal and state programs. Hunt's background spans Huntingdon Area SD, West Perry HS, Central Intermediate Unit and extensive state education involvement. She holds a BA in chemistry from Gettysburg College and a master's in special education from Penn State, with all but dissertation in an EdD program. She plans to aid Chapter 5 implementation and notes Upper Adams offers strong programs and friendly staff. Registration info for Gettysburg Center HACC appears in a separate line.
