County Officials and Historical Society Clash Over Covered Bridge

Adams County commissioners and the East Berlin Historical Society remain at odds over whether to restore or replace the covered bridge. Landowners Leroy and Mrs. Rinehart want action to clear their land and remove wreckage from the bridge site. An injunction prevents removal due to a 1976 court order at the society’s request. Plans after Hurricane Eloise called for restoring the 81 year old bridge, but officials say restoration is impractical because of a three ton restriction and high costs.
