Migrant Farmworkers Arrive for Adams County Apple Harvest

Migrant workers from the south are entering Adams County for the annual apple harvest. McKelvey of Farmworkers Corp says about 150 migrants have arrived, many without jobs or housing, with the agency scrambling to provide aid. Gettysburg firemen respond to duplicate alarms

Gettysburg firefighters were called twice to 760 minor alarms Thursday evening. An automatic alarm at the Charlie Weaver Museum on Baltimore Street prompted evacuation and a police check after a presumed bomb threat. Fire crews spent about 29 minutes inspecting the building before handling a boiler room fire at the Majestic Building on Carlisle Street.

Plans for Recycling Drive Lift Benefit for Muscular Dystrophy

Mobile collection units will visit Gettysburg North Gettysburg Shopping Center on Aug 24. The drive, organized by Reynolds Aluminum, aims to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by paying per pound of aluminum collected. Last year the effort yielded 12 million pounds and donated over $2.12 million. Aluminum beverage cans and clean household aluminum are accepted, plus certain items like siding and furniture if free of contaminants. The program spans 45 states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Gettysburg Blue Grass Music Fest at Campground

The 12th Gettysburg Music Festival will be held at Gettysburg Campground, 116 West Gettysburg, this weekend. Acts include Shenandoah, J.D. Crowe and New South, Green Valley Ramblers, Bluegrass Neighbors, Bobby Hicks, and Larry Conners. Promoter Carrton Haney helped popularize bluegrass with a 1965 festival near Fincastle, Va.

Adams County 4-H Round-Up Set for August 12 at South Mountain

Adams County 4-H members will display more than 700 projects at the Round-Up on August 12 at the South Mountain Fairgrounds.
