Adams County records twenty traffic deaths in seven months, surpassing last year’s sixteen. July set a record with five deaths, while state police logged two collisions with injuries and solved twenty-two of sixty-seven hit-run cases. Police made over one thousand traffic arrests and issued many warnings, vs prior year figures.
London gold prices surged on the London bullion market as the dollar slid, with gold fixed at 3207.50 per ounce, up $6.20 from Friday and matching a new high. Zurich market closed for a holiday. European rates and currencies showed declines across major exchanges, including the pound at 1.9355 and various currencies down from prior levels.
State Rep. Kenneth Cole of Gettysburg recited a long list of 682 bills passed in the latest session on his Lpdate Harrisburg radio show. He highlighted consumer, business, labor reforms and government changes including mortgage options, mobile home protections, energy conservation measures, tax exemptions for low income people, and a program to boost industrial growth. Scot J Eby 1976 Mercedes Benz truck also uninjured after flipping on its side on Route 38 at Cross Keys near noon While attempting to pass a slow vehicle Eby lost control. New Oxford firemen assisted and the wreckage was cleared, road blocked about an hour.
Secretary of State Cyrus Vance will travel to Jerusalem and Cairo as planned despite Anwar Sadat demanding Israel return captured Arab lands as a condition for resuming peace talks. Officials say the visit may help restart negotiations and salvage hopes for a settlement. Dayan says the US should chair talks. Begin welcomes US criticism of Sadat. Sadat urges a broader US role and a comprehensive peace proposal.
Straban Township supervisors authorize 3590 to Adams County SPCA to support a temporary dog shelter. Plans include a barn and a self funded setup with volunteer workers, lights and water, insurance, and potential donations to cover operating costs through year end.
Adams County Commissioners request extends the solicitation date for Title VI proposals. The Manpower Advisory Board will address extending to additional projects including water and sewage disposal. Adams County chief juvenile probation officer Linda Hemmer says the amended Juvenile Act shifts status from delinquent to dependent, leaving previously delinquent youths harder to manage. Foster home closures may burden counties as Loysville Youth Development Center quits, with Adams having few transfers and relying on Tressler Lutheran services for placements.
Pennsylvania State Employment Service reports 28,200 Adams County residents employed in June, up 1,006 from May. Unemployment down slightly as maritime and seasonal seekers lift the rate. About 1,500 students sought work in the York Adams area, with local job gains totaling 1,080. A labor dispute at Medusa Cement Co. in York County idled 200 jobs in stone, clay and glass production.
Chief Ruéisil stated the blaze began after matches were used in the shed. Tenants Roger and others were involved as investigators pieced together the scene. Firemen spent about an hour controlling the fire and determining the cause.
