Adams County records twenty traffic deaths in seven months, surpassing last year’s sixteen. July set a record with five deaths, while state police logged two collisions with injuries and solved twenty-two of sixty-seven hit-run cases. Police made over one thousand traffic arrests and issued many warnings, vs prior year figures.

Dollar Slides And Gold Hits Record

London gold prices surged on the London bullion market as the dollar slid, with gold fixed at 3207.50 per ounce, up $6.20 from Friday and matching a new high. Zurich market closed for a holiday. European rates and currencies showed declines across major exchanges, including the pound at 1.9355 and various currencies down from prior levels.

Cole Tells Of Busy Session By Legislature

July Sets Record for Coolness Amid Hot Humid Days

Gettysburg Times records show July ended as the coolest July in 73 years of data with only five days in the nineties and a high of 93 on its hottest day. Daily highs averaged 80.6 and the month’s average 71.5, about 3.7 degrees below normal, with near 1962’s 71.22 degree mark as the closest prior. July also tied January and June for extra precipitation in this period.

Local layoff to not affect maintenance program

Charles Rinehart county superintendent of state highways says the PennDOT top level cut will not affect local maintenance. He notes the local crew has varied from 120 to 107 men since 1970 and remains short of the authorized complement.

Deer Cause Of Car Upset At Edge Of Town

State police investigated two no injury traffic accidents Monday on state roads. Larry Steinour escaped injury as his 1970 Plymouth flipped on its side while swerving to avoid a deer on Route 116 east of Gettysburg at 11 20 p m Firemen from Gettysburg aided on scene. Fire in Shed Traced to Playing With Matches

Chief Ruéisil stated the blaze began after matches were used in the shed. Tenants Roger and others were involved as investigators pieced together the scene. Firemen spent about an hour controlling the fire and determining the cause.
