In a Adams County Farmers Association forum, Democratic hopefuls Larry Becker and Rarig debated inflation and unemployment while agreeing on steep defense cuts. Four state legislative candidates backed current tax systems and Thornburgh school block grants. Rarig blamed inflation on overproduction and high government borrowing. Becker urged tariffs and domestic focus to curb unemployment.

Emmitsburg mayor race ends as Boyle declines complaint

Joan Boyle, defeated in Emmitsburg Maryland, will not file a challenge over an identifiable voting mix up that kept some voters from casting ballots. Election officials say judges may request identification at any time and that those without id could vote later. Final tallies: Robert Preston 207 to 115 over Boyle. council seat: John Gill 183 to 119 over John Dick. Preston and Gill to take office Monday.

Three county delegates chosen to state university trustees caucus

Three countians Pitzer, Myers, and Widerman were chosen as voting delegates to the spring meeting of the Penn State Board of Trustees with Dan Waybright and Dave Wenk as alternates. The delegates urged support for John Pitzer, a four term candidate. The May 27 meeting will be at State College. A follow up council meeting named soil erosion as a major national agriculture issue and launched the Cost Effective Conservation Practices topic for the 1983 Farm Forum. A speakers bureau was approved to raise public knowledge about agriculture.

Times connected to satellite downlink at Gettysburg Times

The Gettysburg Times joined a satellite downlink system after AP technician Brian Greenway connected a rooftop parabolic reflector. The system transmits news from New York to Philadelphia and then to the downlink, replacing older telephone line services. It operates via WESTSTAR TV at 22,500 miles above Brazil and costs about $10,000, with potential future use by local radio stations.
