First Lady Barbara Bush tells 2,000 attendees in Harrisburg to use her actively to build alliances for literacy. She cites Pennsylvanias cradle of literacy status, praises nationwide progress, and urges volunteers and funding support across private public and government groups.
Kenneth Bucher of Gettysburg, once illiterate for 50 years, received a kiss from Barbara Bush after addressing 2,000 at the National Conference of State Literacy Initiatives in Harrisburg. He credited his wife Sue, tutor Nora Brandt, and the Gettysburg Literacy Council for his journey from illiteracy to literacy, teaching one lesson at a time. He praised alliances and noted a promotion and new computer role unlocked by reading. The first lady invited him to Gettysburg, saying she would visit.
Timothy David Liveisberger, 23, of Hanover, pled no contest to second degree murder in the May 28 1989 mobile home fire that killed his fiancee Colleen Sue Boyde 29 of Oxford Township. Judge Oscar F. Spicer sentenced him to life in state prison. He confessed after police interviews in Gettysburg.
Gettysburg approves a two hour RPP pilot in seven blocks on the north side of town. Residents must prove residency and vehicle ownership to obtain permits including for overnight guests. College students are exempt from vehicle ownership proof.
Francis Bucky Alberts longtime Gettysburg Municipal Authority manager died Monday afternoon at Gettysburg Hospital aged 87. He lived at 223 Baltimore Street and was active in local sports clubs and civic groups. He served in World War II and worked 43 years for American Waterworks. He is survived by his wife Ida and children Judy, Francis Jr., and Thomas plus seven grandchildren and several siblings. Funeral services scheduled for Thursday at St James Lutheran Church.
