Loss of the Lydia and perilous escape by crew near Grand Bank
An eyewitness account from Elihu Smith of New Bedford describes the burning of the Lydia bound from Cronstadt to Elfi, the crew’s frantic efforts to fight the fire, abandon ship, and consort with several vessels including the Danish brig Ryersteig and the New York ship New-York. The narrative notes scarce provisions, rescuers’ aid, and the crew’s eventual rescue on July 26 and August 12 on the Grand Bank vicinity.
