Ship Columbia’s Harrowing Open Boat Escape and Rescue

Norfolk reports detail the Boston bound ship Columbia under Captain Skillings, which sprang a severe leak in mid Atlantic. After discharging cargo and fighting the sea, the crew abandoned ship in an open boat with 15 aboard. They endured days of gales, hunger, and thirst before being taken aboard the brig Lydia near the Western Islands. Captain Dunn and crew offered aid, with the Seamen owner John E. cited for gratitude.
