A meditation on sleep and social contrast as night fades. The poem notes the rich and the beggar alike slip into forgetfulness under night’s mantle. Dawn will reveal sorrow and hunger, urging rest rather than striving.
In England the Prince of Anamaboo laughs at a friend who, after a large dinner, needs four horses to pull his phaeton. He recalls riding earlier that morning when a small horse “ran away” with the man. In another outing at a play he quips that he saw men “playing de fiddle and some playing de fool.”
An 18th century New York July report notes a subscription in Trenton New Jersey for emigrants from Wales newly arrived via New York. The appeal describes desperate conditions and widespread famine in Wales. Also includes long transcribed letters on naval trade policy from Whitehall 1801 1803 and a death notice for John Hempstead aged 106 in Stephen town.
A fragment notes the subject consistently wears breeches and is said never to wear any other attire, establishing a distinctive wardrobe habit linked to the individual.
