Cherokee Deputation Seeks Promise of U S Friendship

A Cherokee delegation of five chiefs with interpreters met the War Office in Washington to seek assurances from President and Secretary of War. They pressed for protection of their lands, questioned troop removals, requested maps of boundaries, and urged written pledges of friendship and support. The secretary assured the Cherokees of ongoing U S trust and promised a treaty meeting at Southwest Point in Tennessee. The delegation left confident in the government’s commitments.
