A horse pulling a wagon loaded with eggs bolted in Newton New Jersey, scattering driver, passengers, and eggs. The driver, named Hain, escaped unharmed as the eggs spoiled plans for a wreck. The item also notes political chatter with mentions of LaFollette and Wilson and a long service judge in Tennessee.
In Dumas Arkansas on September 27 a mob of fifty to one hundred men overpowered deputies, dragged Charles Malpass Sr. from jail and hanged him at a water tank after a battle at his home that left Sheriff W D Preston, Deputy Shapide Berney Ste and two Mulatto sons of Malpass dead or wounded. The mob dispersed with no identified leaders. The sheriff’s wife and Malpass's younger son escaped from the house and are not believed involved. Public terror surrounds the Malpass family, but authorities expect no further trouble.
