Reports out of Oyster Bay say the president has summoned the Secretary of the Navy to discuss sailing the battleship fleet to the Pacific a month earlier than planned. Initial timing had sixteen battleships departing around December 17, with urgency rising due to Oriental immigration strains on the Public Coast and Vancouver riots.
A Chicago trade journal’s September issue features Sumter’s Brick works with a full two page illustrated article. It highlights improved machinery across departments and steam shovels for clay digging. The contractor for the Lee Court House ordered one million bricks, signaling strong demand for the hustling brick manufactory.

Cheraw reports that after years of effort a regular steamboat service will soon operate between Cheraw and Georgetown. The Merchant and the Ghio will run on schedules, cutting northern and western freight rates by about 25 percent. The Pee Dee river dredging project progressed after multiple surveys and wartime orders, with the Pee Dee dredge and four swaggers active to finish the channel work.
