Sec J S Warren of Memphis Business Men's Club reports to Harvie Jordan that the Gorton Conference in Memphis is fully organized for November 10 11 and 12 1908. Representatives from Memphis groups including City at Large Merchants Exchange Cotton Exchange and Trades and Labor Council attended the organization meeting.
The article reports a pointed permanent Chairman being chosen and tasked with selecting a Finance Committee. President Taylor of the Gunners' Association calls for member attendance at the Conference with delegations from Cotton Oil Mills Fertilizer factories banks and various business groups plus farmers. The meeting is billed as one of the Souths largest Cotton Conferences with delegates from nearly all cotton interests and daily contributions to support higher cotton prices.
Newspaper reports note about five million dollars forecast in bets on the coming presidential election. Bets range from a few dollars to twenty thousand dollars and target candidates and doubtful states, with many wagers designed to win regardless of the outcome.
The article notes that horse rates prizes fights and similar contests should keep wagers from drawing scrutiny. It argues newspaper reports of bookmakers activity at race tracks are of little interest to readers and implies wagering details are not newsworthy.
