Mutinous crews on two Brazilian battleships fired on loyal ships and shelled the city. Several officers were killed and the mutineers, demanding higher pay and an end to corporal punishment, held two ships outside the harbor awaiting Congress action on amnesty.
South Carolina Red Cross branch will convene in Gov. Ansel's office on Friday to discuss issues ahead of the national Red Cross convention in Washington on December 6. Members named from Charleston Georgetown Beaufort Newberry Columbia Lancaster and Greenville will attend.
