Imperator Transatlantic Steamship Launched at Hamburg
The Hamburg American line unveiled its mammoth steamship Imperator, the largest vessel in the world, with Emperor Williams as sponsor. It will displace about 52,000 tons when completed and is commanded by Captain Hans Ruser, a veteran seaman born in 1862 who joined the line in 1890 after a long apprenticeship. The ship’s length exceeds Washington Monument height by 326 feet and would rival the Capitol’s footprint if placed beside it.
