Sparks from wires report on the George Town naval militia muster with fifty members including nine licensed pilots and engineers. Commander DuBos outlines plans for a launch and equipment costing about 4000 dollars under South Carolina naval militia funding.
Henry R. H. E. McIver, famed as a soldier of fortune with exploits across many lands, was discovered dead in his bed at his West 22d Street home. Last seen alive Sunday night by Charles Mitchell, his housemate. McIver claimed service in the Sepoy mutiny, Garibaldi’s Italy, Don Carlos, the Confederate Civil War, Maxi milian’s Mexico, Napoleon III’s forces, the Khedive’s cavalry, and King Milan’s Servia guard. Born aboard a Hampton Roads ship in 1841, he was collaborating on a story “Fighting Under Eighteen Flags” with a well known author at the time of death. Dr. C Williams Bailey, naval militia surgeon for South Carolina and U S marine surgeon for this port, assisted in local medical affairs.
