In Georgetown South Carolina on May 1 1907 leaders call for boosting the local fish and bird friendly economy. They praise the swallow and other birds for controlling boll weevil numbers and urge farmers to protect nesting sites and provide bird shelters to aid natural pest control.
The British steamer Sagami landed the crew of the British tank steamer Lucifer, abandoned after heavy seas drove it into latitude 40.19 north. Signals and flares failed to attract nearby vessels, sparking a perilous five hour rescue before the Lucifer sank with crew losses of belongings.
A vivid description extols Judge Artman’s arraignment of saloons as a societal menace. It argues liquor traffic fuels crime, poverty, and social ruin, warning that private citizens know the issue and its consequences.
